Who is KAFDA?
The Keppel And Fitzroy Delta Alliance (KAFDA) is supported by a broad alliance of individuals and groups, including conservation, fishing, boating and natural resource management.
All are interested in saving Keppel Bay and the Fitzroy Delta from industrialisation.
We don’t want to turn Keppel Bay into another Gladstone Harbour. This is the largest river delta in Australia and the future health of the Fitzroy River and Keppel Bay hinge on the delta remaining in its natural state.
KAFDA is made up of concerned citizens, who live and work in this area, and understand its significant conservation value. They are concerned about the possible effects to air quality, water quality, scenic amenity and the ecosystem as a whole. Resulting impacts on social structure, access, recreational use, tourism and other established local business are high on the agenda.
Are the 200 long term jobs created from the proposed development and money generated to offshore economies enough to justify the changes to our sense of place? our lifestyles? our livelihoods?
We need your support, because we will only succeed if enough voices raise concern about proposed development.
This is your chance to have a say in how your region is managed for the future.

We don’t need Gladstone mark II.
great initiative, thanks to whoever had the foresight to kick this off. The only way our government’s will take notice of us is if we can present a consistent, sensible, and unified perspective. We can whinge all we like as individuals – that will get us nowhere though.
Everyone should be aware that the Balaclava Island terminal is the thin edge of the wedge, and there are several other coal loading facilities planned for the Fitzroy Delta. If one project gets up, that will be the green light for all of them.
I live in Gladstone and the destruction to this beautiful harbour is unprecedented in modern times and you can be assured that the crystal clear waters of Keppel Bay will be gone forever, you all have to get on board and stop this development. GPC said that they have to work with the fishing industry and public in this time of transition. This is not a time of “transition” but rather a time of destruction!!!
I think it would be a good idea to bring one of your meetings south to Gladstone. You would be supprised how much support you would get. We have learnt 1st hand how quickly you’re lifestyle can be lost – maybe Keppel community could get some value hearing from long term residents about what their in for.
I think a meeting in Gladstone would be a good Idea.
Last night’s informative and passion-packed meeting at the Great Western showed just how much concern and frustration there is in the community about these potentially catastrophic proposals. Let’s keep up the momentum and do everything in our power to keep our coastline free of coal ports.
I think a meeting in Gladstone would be a very good idea to tell the residents here complacency is not on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
How about a top shelf website for this one, looking a bit amateur at the moment for such an important topic. GKI is fine, coal mmmm?
Hi there, any news from the KAFDA Team? What’s instore for the year ahead?
We gotta fight this one…..don’t let short-term employment prospects for a select few (probably non-locals); dollars for an already broke and short sighted government and the already proven sacrilage that’s taken place in Gladstone Harbour over-ride our lifestyles, the amenity of our special area and the reasons why we choose to live here.
There’s not a lot I can add to the above comments, other than to highlight the fact that beautiful Keppel Bay,the reason we and so many others chose to live here, will be lost forever.Take a look at the size of the Fitzroy delta, it’s scary how many more projects are on the drawing board.I suggest these three are the tip of the iceberg and that it’s quite reasonable to look at Gladstone as a template of the Fitzroys’ future, given one project gets the go- ahead.
I have lived and fished in this area my whole life and can not believe that any Company would want to develop a loading facility in such a shallow area for the size of the ships that will obviously be required. The dredging required would make anything that is happening in Gladstone Harbour seem to be child’s play compared to what is required here. This is the second largest river delta in Australia – do we want it to end up like the delta area of the Murray- dead?
We don’t need to spoil another Gladstone leave wellalone.
where is all this going to end, will it take a dead ocean before they stop and take a real good look at what will happen in a few years down the track.
keep Keppel beautiful and healthy
